Preventing motorcycle crashes as Minnesota’s weather warms up

On Behalf of | May 6, 2024 | Motorcycle Accidents |

As Minnesota welcomes the warmer weather of spring and summer, motorcyclists are eagerly hitting the roads to enjoy the scenic landscapes and open air. However, there is a good reason why May is known as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The increase in motorcycle traffic that occurs during the warmer months also raises the potential for accidents.

One of the most effective ways to prevent motorcycle accidents is through proper training and education. Every rider, regardless of their experience level, should complete a state-approved motorcycle safety course. These courses teach essential riding skills, traffic awareness and accident avoidance techniques. If you ride and you haven’t taken a refresher course in a while, it may be time to strengthen your skills in this regard.

Additional tips worth considering

If you’ve been riding for some time, you’re likely aware that wearing the right protective gear enhances safety on the road. So, if you’re not wearing an approved helmet, reflective gear, etc., it’s time to update your wardrobe.

Before heading out, you should also perform a pre-ride check to ensure that your motorcycle is in good working condition, and turn on your headlights – even during the day – to increase your visibility to other road users.

You’ll also want to keep in mind that weather conditions can change quickly in Minnesota, affecting road safety. Adjust your riding style and speed to match weather conditions. Wet roads, for instance, require slower speeds and increased following distances to prevent skidding and to better ensure adequate stopping time.

As the weather becomes more rider-friendly, take the time to do what needs to be done to keep you as safe as possible before you ride out. And should you get into a collision despite your best efforts, keep in mind that you have rights.
