Minnesota and many other states require that all drivers on the roadway have some sort of minimum liability insurance. This helps to cover any accidents that occur. However, it’s estimated that one out of every eight drivers is still on the road without minimum insurance coverage.
Make sure you always call the police
Motor vehicle accidents should be reported to the police so that a formal accident report can be done. This holds especially true in situations when you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. While it’s very common that the uninsured driver may ask you to avoid calling the police, you’re within your legal rights to do so, and they must remain there at the accident scene until the police arrive.
Don’t accept cash at the accident scene
Motorists who do not have insurance coverage are notorious for offering to pay cash at the accident scene. This is never a good idea as most people don’t know off the top of their head how much it will cost to repair their vehicle. In addition, you may need to seek medical treatment after the accident, and the other motorists may be responsible for those expenses.
Swap information
While the other driver does not have an insurance card, you can still take down their information. You want to take down their personal information like their driver’s license number, name, address and contact number. You’ll also want to notate their vehicle make, model, color, license plate number and the type of damage that their vehicle sustained from the accident. Taking pictures in this scenario can also be helpful.
Being involved in a car accident can be stressful enough. Having to deal with an uninsured driver can make it even more difficult. By following the steps that we went over above, you can set yourself up for the best chance of successfully getting your claim paid.
