Tragic accidents highlights importance of bike safety

Many people enjoy riding their bikes in the Twin Cities. People ride their bikes for exercise, to commute to their job, or to get to the places they need to go. St. Paul and Minneapolis are cities that have both spent considerable time and money creating safe places for bicyclists. But despite having a community that is bike friendly, tragic accidents still occur.

In light of recent fatal bike accidents in the metro area there is a call for safer streets for bicyclists. The group Safe Streets Save Lives believe that motorists need to understand that they often have to share the road with bicyclists. The organization believes that streets in Minneapolis and the surrounding areas need more than just paint to mark bike lanes. Motorists also need to understand their role in keeping everyone safe. Motorists should not park or stop in bike lanes, they must yield to bicycles when crossing a bike lane, and they should pass bicyclists at a safe distance.

It is everyone's responsibility to keep bicyclists, pedestrians and handicapped people safe on our streets. Many streets in the metro have special bike lanes. But motorists still need to pay attention and understand the laws. If a family has been affected by a bike or pedestrian accident, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in personal injury. An attorney can visit the accident scene and interview witnesses, review police reports, and help determine what happened to cause the accident. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages.

No one expects their loved one will be seriously injured or even killed in a bike accident. Many of these tragic accidents can be avoided if cars understand how important it is for them to be aware of their surroundings and drive as safe as possible.
