The main reason for wrong-way car accidents on the interstate is alcohol use. This is what researchers have discovered in recent years, as these wrong-way accidents have grown more common.
This does not mean it is the only reason, of course. Some drivers may be confused, perhaps because they are inexperienced.
But those types of accidents are often more likely on city streets, where a driver could simply make a wrong turn. The interstate is specifically designed to prevent wrong-way driving and has separate traffic lanes. A driver would have to take the wrong ramp and pass multiple wrong-way signs just to get on the interstate going the wrong direction. In this sense, it is no surprise that driver impairment is the main reason, as a drunk driver may not realize they are making a mistake.
The timing of wrong-way accidents
Another factor to consider is when some of these wrong-way accidents take place. They may happen after dark, such as when someone is driving home from the bar at two in the morning.
At these times, interstate traffic tends to be much lighter than it is during the middle of the day, when workers are commuting. In the afternoon, the wrong-way driver may immediately encounter oncoming traffic, even as they are heading up the ramp, so their mistake becomes clear. But if there are no cars when they get on the road in the middle of the night, and if they are impaired from alcohol use, it is much less likely that they would immediately realize the error. They may keep driving the wrong way until they cause a serious crash.
