Understanding e-bikes and the rules surrounding them

On Behalf of | Jul 2, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

E-bikes are different from traditional bikes. They have an electric motor that the rider uses to power the bike rather than just the pedals. In order to operate them legally in Minnesota and around the United States, it’s imperative that the user understands how they work and their legality. Here is more information about e-bikes and the rules surrounding them.

The different types of e-bikes

There are three different types of e-bikes available for consumers to purchase. Class I e-bikes don’t go over 20 mph. In order for the motor to engage, the rider does need to pedal as well. Class II e-bikes only can go up to 20 mph, just like with the Class I models, but they also do have a throttle. This allows the bike to move without the rider needing to pedal it. Both Class I and Class II e-bikes are generally legal to ride in any areas where traditional bikes are such as in bike lanes or on bike paths. Class III e-bikes can go up to 28 mph. Some of them come with a throttle, while others require pedaling to engage their motors.

E-bike regulations vary in each state

Each state does have its own regulations concerning the legality of e-bikes and operating them. These rules include the required minimum age to operate an e-bike and whether or not they are legal to operate on roadways. All of these rules are in place to protect the riders so that they don’t find themselves involved motor vehicle accidents.

Many individuals choose to ride e-bikes, as they are a lot easier and cheaper to maintain than a motor vehicle. Before operating one, though, they do need to understand the rules and regulations of doing so in their state so that they don’t inadvertently break any laws.
